Curl power

I’m sat here right now with half a tub of conditioner (actually it’s a ‘hair moisturiser’) on my head, waiting for it to do its thing, and people – I’m about to tell you something SHOCKING!

When you gasp in horror at the revelation, all I ask is that you carry on reading, because it’s not as bad as it sounds, honestly! Here it is… I haven’t used shampoo on my hair for over 18 months!!!

OK, now firstly you have to understand that I am a ‘curly girl’. The curls that you see are all my own and it’s not the bad perm you may have thought it was! How this has affected me during all stages of my life so far is a whole other story that I’ll inflict on you some time in the future (I have a lot of time off over Christmas).

So, about 18 months ago, I discovered this web site, which recommended this book. Basically, if you have curly hair, the first worst thing you can do to it is use shampoo, the second worst thing is to use heat on it (i.e. a hair-dryer or tongs). Oh, and never brush or comb it!! So basically I just wash my hair every day with just conditioner (see, I do wash it),  getting out any knots with my fingers, then I towel dry , a bit of hair gel to hold the curls in place and I’m ready to go! All I’ll say is that THIS REALLY WORKS! And if you have curly hair then you have to buy this book! Life is so easy now!

Me and the curls…

I’m a lurker…I work a job whereby it’s so boring they actually tell me I can cruise the Internet. I have a long list of “must checks” and you’re one of them. In the 80’s I spent hours on my hair and was never happy. I finally started to listen to the men in my life (my man and my 12 yr old son) when they told me my hair looked best on days when I had done little to it! (little to it..how can it look nice???? how???) And so, your story about not using shampoo…I believe it probably is what is best for your hair and after 6 months why change what works best? It looks lovely by the way. Its 2004 and I wash my hair with intentionally watered down shampoo and once a week I rinse it with a good old can of beer. Whatever is on hand that the man hasn’t drank. I usually save half a bottle from a long party that’s room temperature. The beer, I swear it gets all the shampoo gunk out. So I do believe that shampoo is full of the same stuff they tell you you need shampoo to remove, thereby you are on a viscious cycle! Perhaps I’ll try conditioner only. I already abandoned a comb, after all God gave us two of those already.
