Autumn

me with a leaf - polaroid

All seasons have there good and bad points, don’t they – here’s how I’m feeling about autumn so far…

Good things:

  • leaves (they look amazing at this time of year – makes you realise how many trees there are all around you, even in the city)
  • conkers/chestnuts/cob nuts… basically all types of nut
  • the colour orange
  • woolly jumpers
  • bonfire night
  • hats, scarves and mittens
  • sitting in front of open fire

Not so good things:

  • leaves (specifically the ones that fall all over the garden and in the gutters – the rest can stay)
  • GMT (the clocks went forward an hour last weekend)
  • the sun setting before 4.30 in the afternoon
  • it’s chilly!
  • gas bills
  • rain and fog… although we get that all year round in this country

How about you – how are you enjoying autumn*?

*or whatever the season is in your part of the world :)

Good Things ~ the colours ~ orange and red; fuzzy socks; fuzzy pyjama pants; mittens and scarves; last night we turned the clocks back 1 hour.

No So Good Things ~ it getting chillier; soon the rainy season will be upon us ~ it can sometimes rain for 3 weeks straight in ‘winter’; the nights are getting longer; I dislike all that commercial hype about Christmas.

I think we could really get along. Totally agree with you on your lists! I pretend to be a serious lawyer who wears suits and stuff and thinks things are really very… erm… serious and who is an adult and who only giggles when no-one is looking. However, i’m also the one who skids to a halt on her bike in the morning because she has just spotted a really shiney concker on the road and has to pick it up (and who then sits on conf calls admiring the smooth shiny brown shells – but sssssh! don’t tell anyone. i’m a serious lawyer. Seriously).

I think we’d get along too! Conkers are always worth stopping for – especially the ones that are just peeping out of the spiky green casing which is so satisfying to prise open and plunder! :)

Autumn? It’s the light and the colours! They’re incredible this time of year. Each day’s different, with leaves changing and falling, the structures of trees gradually being revealed. Like spring, it’s a season of transition, new forms appearing constantly, first scatterings then huge piles of leaves. Catch it all before it’s gone for another year. How to (photographically) rediscover, reinvent this time? That’s the challenge…

You’re right, you do have to be quick with autumn – before you know it it’s slipped away into winter and then there’s the long, long wait till spring!
