This is Castle Towers in the middle of Southampton. Some people call it ugly, but I am rather fond of this brutalist style – especially juxtaposed against the medieval walls and Tudor buildings. Whilst there have been lots of mistakes when it comes to social architecture, I think it’s important to experiment with new styles and materials – we pay so, so much for property and yet so much that is built today seems to be completely bland and samey.

Social housing and communism share a lot of common traits. Both communism and Le Corbusier’s vision of social housing have much to commend them but have been destroyed by poor execution.
