flickr friday – the health and fitness edition

Hello, and happy Friday! This post is comin’ attcha from the glamorous location of my sick bed (it’s very much like my regular bed only strewn with snotty tissues and other icky paraphernalia). I won’t go into details, you’ve heard it all before – it’s all very mucous-based and that’s never good. I will say this though – I am sick of being sick (this is literally the millionth time this year). It may be the Lemsip talking but I am determined to live a healthier lifestyle from here on in!

Cutting down on calories is one thing (and I’m pretty expert at that having been on a semi-permanent diet* since I was 12), eating healthy, wholesome and life-enhancing food though, that’s another thing altogether. And then there’s the exercise – a million nightmarish PE lessons flash before my eyes every time I hear that word.

I know it wont be easy – if I’m truthful I only gave up the cigs in the late 90s because smoking in the workplace became illegal and the thought of having to walk out to a smoking hut made me feel wheezy. The nearest I get to yoga (or any type of exercise) is when I have to wrestle myself into a pair of one-size tights. This should be ‘interesting’! Is it something you’re interested in hearing about or should I stick to the pretty pictures? A separate blog, maybe?

Any hoo, yes, here’s what’s been inspiring me on flickr – just looking at these is making me feel a bit better!

*for semi-permanent dieter you might also read part-time ‘all you can eat’ competitive eater – a British Adam Richman, if you will.

Yes it’s interesting. Because you are interesting. I do come here for the beautiful photos but not just that. I also come here for you and everything that you are. Be that a photographer, a note-taker, a reflexion-maker, a calorie-counter or an exercise-attempter. Whatever you do, you are inspiring. So just be you and we’ll all be fine.

I appreciate your situation,Angie.Just thinking about exercising makes me tired! I would also like to eat healthier (he says whilst eating a bag of Cadburys Buttons!).If only they could make healthy food taste anywhere near as good as the unhealthy stuff! Hope you get better soon.

Hello Angie, sorry to hear about your continuing illness. Here’s my take on getting a little healthier: I don’t like the idea of paying for gyms, etc as I know I won’t keep it up, will feel guilty about not going and wasting money, etc. So I run. I was completely unfit 18 months ago, but downloaded an iPhone app called Get Running which > very gently < and at your own pace gets you to the point where you can run for 30 minutes non stop. It felt SO GOOD to reach that point. I'd tried running once before without an app and failed miserably. It also felt great to just step out the door, not pay anyone anything for the privilege of exercising, etc. I've got to the point where I can run 22km now. I feel so much better for it.

Secondly, the colds which I used to suffer regularly I don't get any more (god I hate tempting fate like that!). I attribute this to a point 5+ years ago when I cut out most dairy because my ex-partner was diagnosed with breast cancer and cut out all dairy for a while. I still eat cheese, but stopped drinking cow's milk. I have green tea, black coffee and rice milk with my muesli – rice milk's delicious unlike soya milk which I don't like at all. I'm not a health freak though and still eat crisps and chocolate!

Hope there's something there that might be helpful and hope you get well soon.

These are brilliant tips, thank you so much!
The thought of a gym fills with with so much dread so maybe running is the way to go! I need at the very least to start walking more (and regularly) – I’ll definitely check out that app!
(I’ve heard a lot of people do well by giving up dairy – so long as i don’t have to give up the coffee)!
      Thanks again 😀
