I have a soft spot for brutalist architecture. I know it’s not everybody’s cup of tea but I prefer that a designer has tried something different and innovative with new materials rather than try and replicate the past on the cheap.
This is Castle House, erected on the site of the original motte and bailey Southampton Castle built a thousand years earlier. If the Normans had had the materials and know-how back then I can’t help thinking this is the sort of thing they’d have knocked up.

15 August 2010 at 20:09I am with you on brutalism and about trying something new. All these new builts in the fake victorian, fake edwardian, mock tudor – there is just so little innovation in new builds, it’s all so beige. Argh.
